Grooming – A Transition into District-Led Grooming

Moving Forward Together: District-Led Grooming in the Upper Canada Snowmobile Region

The Upper Canada Snowmobile Region (UCSR) and the 16 clubs of the district are entering an important period of change and transition as we continue to adapt to evolving conditions, funding realities, and the long-term sustainability of our trail system. At the heart of this transition is our move toward a District-Led Grooming model. This is a collaborative approach designed to make the best possible use of our shared resources while continuing to deliver safe, reliable, and enjoyable trails for riders across the region. This model is not about reducing club involvement. In fact, clubs remain a critical partner in everything we do. District-Led grooming allows UCSR to:

  • Utilize volunteers, workers, equipment, and funding more efficiently.
  • Coordinate grooming routes and schedules across club boundaries.
  • Assigned mileage of 100-150km per groomer.
  • Improve consistency and trail quality where conditions allow.
  • Maintain equipment in accordance with OEM specifications and industry best practices.
  • Respond more flexibly to weather, snow conditions, and trail traffic.
  • Maintain a strong focus on operator safety and rider safety.

By coordinating grooming at the district level, we can reduce duplication, optimize groomer use, and ensure that limited resources are applied where they provide the greatest benefit. Our goal remains clear: Safe trails, responsible use of resources, and a strong partnership between the district and clubs now and into the future. We thank all volunteers, operators, and club volunteers for their continued commitment as we move forward together.

We recognize that change can be challenging. This approach will continue to evolve as we learn, adapt, and respond to on-the-ground realities. UCSR is committed to working closely with clubs, volunteers, and partners to refine this model and ensure it meets the needs of our district.

Who Manages Grooming

Grooming operations is, and will continue to be, managed by:

  • UCSR Board. Each club President (or representation) is a director of the UCSR. Directors are empowered to manage/supervise the business and affairs of the District.
  • 1st VP – Grooming. Exercise Executive strategic oversight over grooming within the district.
  • District Grooming Manager. Oversee all aspects of the District’s grooming operations in accordance with the strategies, plans and policies approved by the board.
  • Grooming Committee. Each club has a member on the district grooming committee. The mandate of the Grooming Committee is to provide a venue for cross-club/area discussion, coordination, share best practices, and develop recommendations for UCSR board decision making.
  • Area Grooming Coordinator. Will oversee all aspects of the grooming operations for their assigned groomers. These are generally the same volunteers who were the Club Grooming Coordinator.
  • Grooming Operators. Will operate UCSR assigned groomer in a safe and professional manner based on direction from their Area Grooming Coordinator. These are the same operators who worked and volunteered for the club.
